RECENT ANNOUNCEMENTS

  CAMP RINCE CEOL

A letter from An Coimisiun le Rinci Gaelacha regarding Open Workshop being granted to Camp Rince Ceol can be found here.

In part, the letter states:

25 May, 2010

"...bearing in mind that the Rules for Open Camp status in 2010 are relatively new, and in particular, bearing in mind that there may have been certain confusion over what criteria now apply, it has been reluctantly decided to grant Camp Rince Ceol Open Status for the year 2010 ...

"... In reaching this decision, I am also conscious that An Coimisiun has always tended to prioritise the interest of children.  Therefore, denying Camp Rince Ceol Open Status at this stage would not be in the participants' best interest, and would cause disappointment to those children involved."

Sincerly,

Sean MacDonnchadha

(Chair, An Coimisiun le RInci Gaelacha) "

  Scholarship Announcement

On behalf of the IDTANA, we are happy to announce the 2009 Scholarship winners.

This year, there were nearly 200 applicants and given an average of 10 pages per application (with some much longer), the Scholarship Committee read and evaluated approximately 2,000 pages of material.  We would like to thank our seven Scholarship Regional representatives for their service in evaluating these applications.

Based on the number of applicants, it was determined that there would be four winners at the college level and 21 winners entering college in the Fall….for a total of 25 recipients.   We would like to thank all those that applied in 2009 and look forward to offering additional scholarships in 2010.

It shouldn't go without saying -  Irish dancing has a wealth of talented students and the IDTANA is happy to recognize these student/dancers and to provide these scholarships for their work both in and out of the classroom.

On behalf of the IDTANA

Russell Beaton ADCRG,                 Michael Mullane ADCRG,

Scholarship Chairman                      President IDTANA

   2009 IDTANA SCHOLARSHIPS

November 1, 2008

The Irish Dance Teacher's Association of North American is proud of the accomplishments of all dancers not only competitively and artistically, but also academically.  To recognize the accomplishments of these dancers who excel in the classroom and in the dance studio,  the IDTANA is proud to offer $20,000 annually in scholarships for high school senior students, and those students who are already attending college.  The Scholarship winners were announced this week at the North American Irish Dance Championships.

The IDTANA Scholarship Committee is comprised of a representative from each of the seven regions in North America.  Under the guidance of Russell Beaton ADCRG, who is beginning his thirty-eighth year with the Frederick County (Maryland) Public School System where he is the Curriculum Specialist for Visual and Performing Arts - the IDTANA Scholarship Committee works diligently in identifying the scholarship recipients from the application and essay process.

New applications are now available available for download here.  The Scholarships are awarded approximately in early July of each year with recognition and presentation at the 2009 North American Irish Dance Championships.

ADDITIONAL WORLD QUALIFIERS FROM NORTH AMERICAN CHAMPIONSHIPS

09/14/2008

At the September, 2008 An Coimisiun le Rince Gaelacha meeting, a motion was proposed and approved to change the qualification rules for the 2009 World Championships.   An Coimisiun approved that the the qualification for the World Championships will be amended to:

Single Year Age Groups     5 in the first 20 and 1 in every ten (or part of) thereafter

Double Year Age Groups   7 in the first 20 and 1 in every 5 (or part of) thereafter

It is important to note, that no other part of the qualification rules were changed.

Based on this newly amended rule, many of the competitions at 2008 North American Irish Dance Championships qualified an additional dancer(s). The list is attached of those dancers that have now qualified for the World Championship from the 2008 North American Irish Dance Championships based on this new rule.  Any questions should be directed to your teacher.

NEW AN COIMISIUN RULING
Please note that as and from June 15th 2008. Any person, whether registered with An Coimisiun or not, who gives a workshop, in any form, to a class, should be regarded as being associated with that class and any other dancing school in which they have an involvement, whether directly or indirectly. All classes associated with such a person should be regarded as being connected by association.

The above rule, which became effective June 15, 2008 was implemented by An Coimisiun le Rince Gaelacha, at the request of teachers world wide, including the IDTANA, to address a two-fold concern with workshops and subsequent adjudication by those involved or associated to the workshops.  It is important to note that the rule only applies to workshops taking place after June 15, 2008 and the rule is not retrospective.

The rule is very new and although it was discussed at the recent IDTANA AGM in July with registered teachers, it is important to offer a brief explanation to address the recent questions and concerns that the IDTANA has received from its' dancers and parents.

The first item that the rule addresses are workshops being conducted by someone not registered with An Coimisiun (i.e. senior students, non-registered teachers) who are still also involved with another school.  For example, a senior student from School A, goes into School B's classes and conducts a workshop specifically for School B's classes.  An ADCRG associated with School A can no longer adjudicate the dancers from School B because of the workshop relationship established by the senior dancer with School A.

The second item was to address multiple workshops being conducted by registered teachers of An Coimisiun or teachers/senior students not registered with An Coimisiun.  Under the old rule, if a TCRG/ADCRG conducted a workshop (or a non-registered teacher conducted a workshop) for classes at School A, School B, and School C - the TCRG/ADCRG or the school associated with the unregistered teacher could not adjudicate any of the dancers from these schools.  However, regardless of whether it was the same or different material, School A, School B and School C were still able to to adjudicate each others dancers.  Under the new rule, for any class workshop conducted after June 15, 2008, these schools are now all associated and all ADCRGs associated with the workshop teacher, along with ADCRGs from School A, School B, and School C cannot adjudicate each other's dancers.

Please consider that this is a new ruling which will naturally generate various questions and scenarios that will require additional discussion. If you have additional questions, please contact your TCRG.

2008 IDTANA Cyril McNiff Scholarship Winners

The 2008 Cyril McNiff Scholarship winners were recently announced at the 2008 North American Irish Dance Championships in Nashville, TN.  We welcome you to meet this year's winning applicants here.  (6/08)

        Recent Announcements (05/08)

  • At the An Coimisiun le Rince Gaelacha's AGM meeting held in Dublin on May 18, 2008 - a motion was proposed by the Irish Dance Teacher's Association of North America to rescind the "tights rule" that was to become  effective January 1, 2009 for all dancers aged 19 and older.  After a full discussion, it was voted upon and approved that the rule be rescinded effective immediately.   It should also be noted that An Coimisiun, through its appointed Costume Committee, will continue to monitor and pursue the enforcement of required costume lengths at all Feiseanna and Major Competitions.

  • The IDTANA has received a number of emails regarding NAFC rule 31 specifically as it pertains to wearing wigs in Beginner and Advanced Beginner competitions. The NAFC rule 31 states:

    • That competitors in girl's competitions at the Beginner and Advanced Beginner Grade will wear only the competitor's dancing School costume or a skirt and blouse; wearing of wigs and cosmetic makeup is prohibited.

The rule as listed on the NAFC website is unfortunately incorrect.  Although a motion was made in this manner and discussion occurred at various levels, the rule was never adopted and therefore is not enforceable as a National rule.  We apologize for any confusion in this matter.
